Global AIDS Monitoring 2017 Indicators for monitoring the 2016 United Nations Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS
The purpose of this document is to provideguidance to national AIDS programmes andpartners on the use of indicators to measure andreport on the country response.The 2016 United Nations Political Declaration onHIV and AIDS: On the Fast-Track to Acceleratethe Fight against HIV and to End the AIDSEpidemic by 2030,1 adopted at the UnitedNations General Assembly High-Level Meeting onAIDS in June 2016, mandated UNAIDS to supportcountries in reporting on the commitments in thePolitical Declaration. This Political Declarationwas built on three previous political declarations:the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS, the 2006 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDSand the 2011 Political Declaration on HIV andAIDS.Member States unanimously adopted the 2001Declaration at the United Nations GeneralAssembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS in 2001. The2001 Declaration reflected global consensus on acomprehensive framework to achieve MillenniumDevelopment Goal 6: halting and beginning toreverse the HIV epidemic by 2015. It recognizedthe need for multisectoral action on a range offronts and addressed global, regional and countrylevelresponses to prevent people from becomingnewly infected with HIV, expand health-care access
